Red Marlin MD says “au revoir” to driving comforts
Red Marlin’s managing director Danny Rughoobeer is expecting the unexpected when he, and one of his best friends, take part in Bangers 4 Ben at the start of October.
All for a good cause, the challenge involves buying a car for a maximum of £750 and driving it from the UK down through France to the Pyrenees and back again. Each team is encouraged to raise £2,000 for Ben and all the cars will be auctioned after the event to raise as much money as possible for the charity.
However, with such a limited car buying budget, do you prioritise comfort or practicality? For Danny, he’s hoping for comfort all the way but realises they’ll probably end up with a small hatchback that is, fingers crossed, easier to fix when they breakdown, as they will almost certainly have a mechanical fault at least once!
The good news, though, is that Danny and friend Ian Richmond, owner of Independent Mobility, have previous experience putting their mechanical skills (and friendship) to the test as their last adventure was the Rickshaw Run across Sri Lanka.

At least this year’s challenge from the 2nd to 6th October, which has a Back to the 80s theme, is closer to home and promises the chance to drive through stunning French countryside, that is when not looking at the car’s ever rising temperature gauge.
Danny said: “I’m most looking forward to seeing some beautiful scenery and raising as much money as we can for Ben. I’m less keen on spending endless hours in an uncomfortable car, and probably an equal amount of time by the roadside.”
Nevertheless, any motoring mishaps will be a small price to pay for helping Ben, the charity that supports people who work, or have worked, in the automotive industry through life’s toughest challenges.
Danny added: “Ben does fantastic work for an industry that is an enormous part of my life. It’s great that through Bangers 4 Ben we’re able to give something back.”
