Five common videography mistakes to avoid
The automotive sector perfectly lends itself to the benefits of videography as it has the versatility to portray the raw human emotion of driving a car through to conveying state-of-the-art technologies.
It also has numerous other benefits such as overcoming language barriers, being useable across various platforms and devices, and can be optimised for different uses when edited appropriately.
However, it can be easy to miss opportunities or simply produce an end product that isn’t fit for purpose.
Our highly experienced videographer, Oliver Dupont, gives his personal insight on five common videography mistakes to avoid.
No plan of action
It’s very easy to go to a shoot with the intention of working on the fly as you arrive or choosing shots based on the moment. While you can’t plan for all possibilities, you can always prepare to a large degree if you know the location, time and what you’re filming. All it takes is a minimal plan to avoid a major headache.
Under-packing
It can be easy to forget a piece of equipment (significant or not) because of wanting to pack light. Therefore, make sure you have a kit or inventory list ready and tick off everything you need as you pack it up ahead of the shoot.
Kit cleaning
Make sure the equipment sensors and lenses are clean. Even a speck of dust or dirt can ruin certain shoots if left unchecked. Staying on top of kit cleanliness should always be a priority before going to the shoot.
Client communication for the best videography
Do you have a brief or a shot list? Has the client laid out exactly what they want? Ensuring the videographer and the client are on the same page will always benefit all parties.
No questions are silly when it comes to being clear and precise, and this can span all the way from pre- to post-production.
Lights, camera, action
Making sure everything on the physical and logistical side is in place is vitally important. It’s as simple as, are the settings correct on the equipment? How is the exposure, light etc? Does the shoot require a specific look? Having the basics covered when it comes to your equipment elevates your video work.
